Books - A Great Alternative To Television For Attachment Challenged Kids

After you've chosen books, build reading aloud into not only your school routine, but also your life. Read at the breakfast table first. Kids will listen when their mouths are full. Start with small chunks of time, setting a timer for 10 minutes of reading at first. When your kids are good at listening during breakfast, start reading to them before bed. Don't waste this opportunity to teach from your unit studies by reading unrelated books. Read a story from the historical time period you are studying or look through factual books together.

If you have a child who is averse to reading or listening, be sure to let that child choose books at the library that he enjoys. Do not criticize his choices! The only exception is if your child chooses books you believe to have inappropriate content. In that case, make it clear to your child ahead of time that you will look through his choices and ensure the books are safe for him to read. Other than that, let him choose what he wants and praise him for being such a good reader.

When you arrive home from the library, if you want to read aloud from an educational or historical fiction book and your child complains, make a deal with him--if he listens for 5 minutes to your book, you'll read to him for 5 minutes from the book he chose. In this way, you not only get to have compliance about reading your book but he gets twice as much read aloud time because he wants to hear from his book as well!

I have had parents wonder to me if this is the best way to deal with a child who is defying a parent. After all, refusing to listen to a book is defiance, right? Wrong. A special needs child (and almost every adopted child can be considered special needs) only has so much tolerance for certain activities. You have to build his "listening muscles" so he can begin to enjoy listening to read aloud. After all, if you meet your child's frustration with listening (probably because of some deficiency in listening) with punishment--you may get compliance when what you really want is a child who loves to learn.

Reading is one of the best ways to begin incorporating learning into your everyday life. Your goal is to begin to change your educational philosophy to recognize that your kids can be learning all the time--not just when they are at a desk. If you are taking every opportunity to read something of value to them, you will add hours to your school day almost effortlessly.

Few Of The Ways To Utilize A Dry Erase Board In School

A dry erase board is a flat, plank, the surface of which is usually white. Its facade is also smooth and shiny, making it ideal for a wide variety of purposes. Dry erase boards can be seen everywhere on campus. They seem to have taken the place of those trusty chalk boards that we have all grown accustomed to in school. These boards have provided smart solutions to some of the most irksome drawbacks that are inherent in chalk boards. For instance, this board has a clear, white, smooth surface, making markings on it easily perceivable for students, even those on the farthest rows. On the other hand, a chalk board has a dull, dark surface that is easily stained and can be quite blurred most of the time.

Here are a few of the ways in which whiteboards can be used in school:

(1) A dry erase board can be used during lectures and discussions. Teachers can make use of these boards during their class room lectures and class discussions. These otherwise mundane class room activities can be made more fun, interesting, and attention-grabbing with the use of such boards. Teachers will find that the smooth surface afford such ease and convenience in writing. Also, they can make use of colored board markers to highlight specific words, dates, places, names, and events. They will also be amused with the board's erasure process. Just a few simple swipes from the board eraser will render the dry erase board spotless and ready again for use.

(2) A dry erase board can be used for reviews and practices. Students can make use of dry erase boards for practicing and reviewing their lessons in spelling, math, and drawing. They can emphasize letters, numbers, solutions, and equations with the help of colored board markers. Also, their creativity and imagination in drawing and art can be pushed to the limit with the use of these brightly colored markers. Illustrations and pictures can be made more vibrant and appealing with the use of various colors. Moreover, with these boards, parents no longer have to worry about allergic reactions and other respiratory problems commonly attributed to using chalk boards and chalk. Since these boards do not require the use of powdery substances, this problem is thus eliminated.

(3) A dry erase board can be used as a projector screen. Schools are realizing that investing in dry whiteboards is more cost effective than investing in projector screens since the former can double as the latter. Due to the board's smooth, flat, and shiny surface, it is an ideal tool during class activities such as slide shows and video presentations. Classes these days are modern and interactive, thus, such activities are in the norm. Now, teachers no longer have to worry about bulky, heavy, and troublesome projector screens. Handy boards such as these can be used for this special purpose too.

Indeed, a dry erase board has proven to be an efficient tool in enhancing both the learning and teaching processes. Hence, it is fast becoming a favorite for both teachers and students. Furthermore, dry erase boards are helping make school life more interesting and fun. Thus, they can be spotted almost anywhere- They can be seen in class rooms, lecture halls, libraries, laboratories, along hallways, and even in football fields, basketball courts, gymnasiums, and locker rooms.

Marl has helped a lot of people over the years with everything from dry erase board, to dry erase boards, so stop by and let us know if you ever need anything.

Speak Simple German: How to Teach Yourself Basic German With Limited Time

If you want to learn German for an upcoming holiday, but you don't have a lot of time, you'll have to take a few shortcuts. There is no point in ploughing through a detailed German text designed for university studies. You need to focus on speaking simple German, and learning crucial words and phrases to get you through the key moments.

The first thing you'll want to do is head to your local bookstore and get yourself a good pocket-size phrase guide. All the large language publishers have their own version, so just flick through a few of them and see which one you like best. You'll want one with useful phrases separated by topic... meeting people, asking for directions, public transport, restaurants, shopping, and so forth. Plus, a good phrase guide should also have a mini-dictionary with the most common words, as well as word lists for days of the week, months, numbers, food, and so on.

A phrase guide is a great way to familiarize yourself with the alphabet and with key words and phrases that you'll need. It is especially useful since you can fit it into your pocket or handbag and refer to it when you're actually there and needing to communicate in German. At worst, you'll be able to point to the phrase and get the message across that way.

To really speak German, however, a phrase guide is only of limited value. The main reason for this is that it doesn't have audio, so your listening skills don't get a workout and your pronunciation is simply an educated guess. Therefore, in addition to your pocket phrase guide, the second thing you'll need to learn simple German in a short space of time is an interactive audio course.

Using an audio course gives you the benefit of being able to hear native speakers, and practise correct pronunciation. It forces you to learn key phrases as they are used in natural conversations, and this is by far the most useful way to learn a language. Since you'll want to be able to speak German while you're there on holidays, learning it in an audio format like this will enable you to do that with confidence.

Most audio courses are now available in mp3 format, so you can listen to them easily on an mp3 player, or on your computer. The best courses also provide additional information about grammar and colloquial use of the language, so they can also be used by students who want to learn German to a serious level as well. The courses are usually broken up into short lessons of approximately 30 minutes, which is an ideal length to fit into your daily routine.

In the days and weeks leading up to your holiday, give some thought to the situations you think you will need to speak German. This will help you to focus your study time on the topics that you'll need. For instance, if you are visiting Germany for a tour of the wine regions, the German words you'll need to know will be quite different to those you would need if you were visiting Germany to watch football! Just focus on the topics that are important to you. Not only will you enjoy learning these words and phrases, but it will also make your holiday much more enjoyable. You'll be able to interact with the locals and experience a taste of German life!

Steve Galvin is a language teacher and owner of leading German site http://www.easygermanlanguage.com, which is packed with free resources for anyone wanting to speak German the fun, fast and easy way. Check out the website for many more great tips and tutorials to help you speak simple German quickly.

Citing Your Sources Prevents Plagiarism and Boosts Innovation

Anyone who has gone to high school or college is somewhat familiar with the process of writing a research paper. Some parts of the essay process like research, formatting, and writing can be fairly labor-intensive. We all have some academic memories of long hours spent in libraries or online, sifting through articles, journals and books to discover the perfect research that supports our paper's thesis.

One often overlooked but particularly laborious part of the paper writing process can be citing our sources in the proper format. After we finally reach the point of completing the research and execution phases of an essay, going back through that research and making the proper citations can be a huge hassle. This means finding every single word, phrase, and idea that did not come from your own creative mind and providing credit where it is due.

Despite the trouble, citing your sources is an incredibly important step to prevent potential plagiarism. The primary line that distinguishes plagiarized material from borrowed material is utilizing citations to give the proper attribution to the authors of the works. Citations tell your readers that the words or ideas they are reading are not originally yours; they in fact come from another source. The citation also tells your readers how to find that source, whether it be online or in a published journal.

Plagiarism poses a big risk to any student, journalist, or academic scholar. One simple mistake of forgoing to cite a source can lead to harsh repercussions, including expulsions and firings. It's simply not worth forgoing proper citations. Although it takes some time and research to make sure all your sources are given credit, doing so is due diligence that needs to take place to avoid a case of student plagiarism.

However, citing your sources is not simply a preventative measure to avoid getting in trouble with plagiarism. Citations also are a great way to foster innovation and creativity within your paper writing process. Although many people leave the citation work to the end of their process, it can be extremely helpful to cite sources while doing the actual research and writing.

Citations are essentially 'links' to all the sources that are constructing the foundation of your paper's thesis. Putting in the research to cite this information framework can provide more ammunition to support your paper's thesis. Not only will you be able to better understand the works you are building on, but your network of citations may provide you with further fuel to create your own unique work.

In other words: building on other people's ideas (and properly citing them) can only help you strengthen your own ideas.

Get the Money You Need For College Now Searching Online Scholarship And Grant Programs

Furthering your education is always a smart investment, but sometimes finding the money for tuition and books can be stressful. Fortunately, there are many ways to get free money for college. Yes, free money. Scholarships and grant programs were established to help people get the education they need without incurring debt.

It is not necessary to have perfect grades in order to qualify for a free grant or scholarship. Some programs award funds based on college majors, ethnic backgrounds, or extracurricular activities. Although it may require extra research and application time, unlike student loans these types of aid do not need to be paid back.

When starting your search for financial aid monies, try using keywords that indicate what major you are going to study, or even a unique quality that might qualify you for ethnic or special interest funds. Some companies sponsor these for students just for using or wearing their products. You never know what you might stumble upon once you start your search.

If you are currently enrolled at a university or career institute, you may consider speaking to someone in financial aid services. The people that work in these offices have up to date knowledge of the best ways to acquire money through scholarship programs, and which programs may be the best for you. If you are not currently enrolled at a higher learning institute, the Internet can be your best resource to find grants and other programs for which you may qualify.

Many students who do not know where to look to apply for free money for college end up turning to student loans. With the millions of dollars available in scholarship and grant money, this should be a students' last resort. Of course, the money you receive from free scholarships may not fully cover the cost of your tuition, but it will help. Student loans should be used with caution as they may have high re-payment rates. Many students end up paying thousands more than they initially borrowed!

Many states have programs that allow you to qualify for tuition assistance based on your grade point average after graduating from high school. These programs offer discounted or even full coverage of tuition in exchange for a great GPA. In some cases, you can even get your books paid for.

Many people do not apply for these free monies available to them simply because they feel like there is too much competition. Every year hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and grants go unclaimed! All you have to do is find one you might qualify for, fill out an application or a short essay and wait for the results. You can never be awarded free money if you do not try.

A higher education is something that is both a financial and personal investment. The pride you feel after completing traditional and online course programs for a degree is unlike anything else. The financial stability of a better job also awaits after you have finished your degree. Do not let the expense of college stand in your way. Check out online scholarship and grant possibilities that could give you tuition money for free!

How to Do Listening Practice: How Often Should You Practice?

A question that should come up but often doesn't is how often to practice listening. Many students have bad habits from high school or university days.

They used to play, play, play, and then study hard for a long intense period. This is the worst way to study.

I once heard that you could shut down all the universities in North America if you threw away all the final exams after students wrote them. Then call back the students to write the exams again. They would probably fail most students and close the university.

The reason? Most students study very long and intensely just before an exam. Then after the exam, they forget most of what they studied. Have you ever experienced this?

If you study few times for long intense periods, your motivation to study again the next time is lower. But even worse, you forget what you studied very easily. So we have two benefits that come with regular study. But I will talk more about that later.

How often?

The ideal study plan is daily study. Doing something everyday makes it easier to remember what you did before and make stronger gains.

What if I am too busy?

I have students who practice three times a week, and still make reasonable progress. They could certainly learn more and faster if they studied five times a week or everyday. But three times a week is still not too bad.

By the way, three times a week means three times in addition to your regular English class. You are taking a regular English lesson every week, aren't you? I strongly recommend that you take a regular English lesson to give you guidance in your studies, and check your mistakes.

So now you have decided to make a regular schedule of study every week. How long should you study for? This is an excellent question, and another place where most students make mistakes.

Many students think study has to be serious and long. I disagree. Make your English listening practice sessions short. Especially if you are a beginner or intermediate level student. Beginner and intermediate level students should start their practice doing intensive listening.

Intensive listening takes a lot of energy and attention, so it should be done in short periods. Ideally, you will do three study sessions every day for about five minutes each. I like to call this interval training. Train for a short period. Then have a rest interval. Then train again.

Interval training certainly works well for athletes. It also works well for listening practice. Intensive listening is not a high level thinking skill. The shadowing technique is at least fifty percent physical, since you have to repeat what you hear. This is also true for the listen and repeat activities.

Remembering things often works better when you are moving. And repeating recall helps you remember better. So train in intervals. Short bursts of intense listening. I suggest around five minutes.

A great idea is to make this training part of your regular schedule. Do it right after or right before some activity. Right before breakfast is great. You are still a bit sleepy, so you are not trying to think too much.

If you try to think too much you will not to the practice correctly. When you are still relaxed and not trying to think too much, you can practice well. Plus it becomes a great part of your daily routine.

With regular practice as a part of you regular routine, say daily routine, you now get two great benefits which I mentioned earlier.

The first benefit of daily practice is motivation. You start your practice and before you know it, you are finished. That's a big part of your day finished, and it was easy. Now you feel good about yourself. This motivates you to do it again tomorrow. And that's a good thing.

The second benefit of daily practice is learning. When you practice regularly, you learn better. You remember more. Your skills grow faster. That also helps with motivation.

Now you have a clear idea of how often to practice listening. It all depends on how fast you want to learn. For those who want to learn fast, study daily. If you are more relaxed about it, study three or four times a week.

Make sure you study for short periods. five minutes or less is best. If you still have time and want to study more, take a three minute break and then study again for five minutes. You will get great results, and feel happy about studying.

Oh, and by the way, you can find lots of short stories for practicing listening at English Listening World. Come visit and study with us!

Advantages You Can Look Forward to in Online Scientific Calculators

In the good old days, people had unique ways to calculate things. Items and objects like leaves, sticks, and even beans were made use of largely for calculation purposes. This method though was in use for a very long period, soon became obsolete. And at times, the result of a calculation largely depended upon the honesty and integrity of the person entrusted with role of calculating things. These situations finally lead to the invention of a wooden calculator called abathia. The wooden framed machine came with wires into which beads were to be assembled for calculation purposes. Interestingly, these calculators were used in offices for quite a long time for easy and normal calculations. But, limited in their functionalities, they were sidelined and thus came other forms of gadgets into the picture.

With the economies and technologies growing at a rapid pace, the need had been felt wide and across to have gadgets that could perform all basic functions automatically and quickly. This lead to emergence of basic calculators that were capable of performing minor calculations like 'plus', 'minus', 'multiplication' and 'division'. Programmable calculators were later invented to make complicated calculations. The scientific calculators that we see today are latest inventions that came about in these segments. There are now widely used in companies and universities for calculation processes. With the advent of internet, these calculators have further been modified to be made available in online version.

Online scientific calculators are capable of carrying out functions like square root, trigonometry, logarithms, binary functions, and so on. Given below are their main benefits:

A] Easy: - The edge that these online scientific calculators have on other forms is that they are far easier to use. Also, in most of these gadgets you will get to see help or manual functions that will assist you in calculation purposes should you get confused with them or not sure which buttons are to be used for calculations.

B] Convenience: - Online scientific calculators are perfect for carrying out different types of complicated functions. Also, Wi-Fi is made available in most areas and as long as you can access the internet from your place, using online scientific calculators for your calculation purposes shouldn't be really tough.

C] Different types of Calculations: - As mentioned earlier, online scientific calculators can be used to carry out different types of calculations with great effect. These calculators can therefore be used by different professionals, students and even business people. Different types of calculations including those related to property taxes, insurance, income tax benefits, and house loans can be easily carried out by these calculators.

D] User friendly Interface: - Most of the calculators that we see today do not have an interface that is user friendly. The features present in these interfaces can easily confuse even a veteran user. Under such a scenario, the emergence of online scientific calculators comes as a big relief to all those who rely on these tiny machines for calculation purposes. The interface that you will get to see here is simple and can be easily navigated upon by anyone. The buttons are well placed just like in the case of standard gadgets.

Language Learning: Moving From Knowing to Using the Language in Everyday Life

If you want to become fluent in a language, just using it in a class setting, or learning it at home with your books and audio files is not enough. You need to integrate your language learning into your day-to-day routine. How to do that? Here are some tips to start using the language you are learning in everyday life.

... As a beginner

Most language courses are structured so that you first learn the basics needed for day to day interactions. If you are in Singapore, and are learning Chinese, English or Malay, you will have plenty of opportunity to put your newly learnt vocabulary to use.

So on week 2 of your learning streak, prepare yourself and order a drink in your new language. You know that these conversations always play out similarly. For example:

  • "One coffee please".
  • "Sugar and milk?"
  • "Yes, please"
  • "Ok, that's S$ 3.00″

Prepare yourself beforehand by imagining how the conversation will go and then just fire the question! There are always aids you can fall back on, like:

  • The menu
  • If you can not hear the price: just pay with a note that is surely large enough, look at the number at the cash counter, or ask the waiter for the bill.
  • Listen closely to how the people around you order, and imitate them

If you can handle this simple and structured conversation without falling back on any other languages, it will give a major boost to your confidence! Later you can put yourself in progressively more difficult situations that are still relatively predictable. You are the customer! So do not worry about being slow or inaccurate.

... At an intermediate level

As a beginner, you may be too slow to interact with people in a more informal way, but once you get beyond the basics, it becomes really important to have friends to speak with in the language you are learning. Ideally, you make new friends that do not have any other language in common with.

This often goes wrong in immersion programs: if you travel to Spain to learn Spanish, attend Spanish classes in the morning, but spend the afternoon just interacting with people from your own country, you are missing out on the most valuable part of the immersion experience.

If other speakers of the language you are learning are not readily available, you can try getting in touch with people virtually by keeping a blog, through Twitter or through language learning communities such as LiveMocha.

You can also try to pick up magazines and newspapers, and watch TV, especially when you have come a bit further into the intermediate stage. Just try and see how much you already understand. If you are learning a language with a different writing system, such as Japanese or Chinese, reading may have to wait until you are at an advanced stage.

... As an advanced speaker

You have learnt the language up to near-native fluency. Congratulations. But you will need to maintain it. Try writing in the language, follow the media and keep in touch with friends who you used to speak the language with! If you do not use it, your ability will die. And what is the point of learning the language in the first place if you are not going to use it?

Learning German for Beginners: 2 Difficult Concepts Made Easy

Whenever I start learning a new language, I am usually filled with two emotions--excitement and confusion. The excitement comes from knowing that there are many fun times ahead. The confusion comes naturally, since there are many aspects about learning German which can overwhelm you when you first start out. Whether you are a language addict like me, or just learning your first foreign language, you'll no doubt share this sense of confusion.

What I've noticed is that most beginners struggle with a few of the more difficult grammar topics. If English is your native language, you'll be fine with the alphabet and vocabulary, since both German and English evolved from the same family of languages. What will be most difficult are the grammar concepts which are completely foreign to an English speaker. Two of the most challenging concepts to grasp initially are noun genders and cases. Let's take a look at each of these and help you become familiar with how to use them correctly.

#1--Noun Genders

In German, every noun has a gender--masculine, feminine or neuter. It doesn't really matter why this is so. What it means for you is that you need to know the gender so that you can use the correct words that go together with these nouns. For example, in English, you use the articles 'the' and 'a/an' before nouns (eg. the chair, an apple, etc.). In German, you need to use a different word for each, depending on which gender the noun is. Here is what you need to know:

  • The word 'the' in German is 'der' (for masculine nouns), 'die' (for feminine nouns), or 'das' (for neuter nouns).
  • The word 'a/an' in German is 'ein' (for masculine and neuter nouns), or 'eine' (for feminine nouns).

In addition to the articles 'the' and 'a/an', a noun is also regularly preceded by adjectives and sometimes a possessive pronoun to indicate who owns it (eg. his old, blue bicycle). In German, these words also must match the noun in terms of its gender. The best way to learn these is by memorizing one example in each gender. Once you've done this, you'll be able to apply the same endings to any words matching that gender.

#2--Cases

The second major topic that really trips up a lot of new language learners is that of 'cases'. A case basically identifies a part of speech in a sentence, including the subject, direct and indirect objects, and ownership. What this means for you is that in addition to changing word endings to match gender, you'll also need to make sure that this ending matches the correct case. There are 4 cases you need to know:

  • Nominative Case--identifies the subject. This is the easiest case because the endings are not changed from the dictionary form. You'll simply need to change endings to match the correct gender. The way to identify nominative case is to ask yourself the following question... "who or what are we talking about? (who or what is doing the action)?"
  • Accusative Case--identifies the direct object. The way to identify this case is to ask yourself the following question... "whom or what does the subject 'see/eat/etc...'?" When you compare the word endings of this case to nominative case, you will notice that you only have to make a change in the masculine gender.
  • Genitive Case--indicates that this noun belongs to someone or something. Ask yourself the question... "whom or what owns this?" The word endings in genitive case are different from nominative case in all genders. In addition, the masculine and neuter noun itself also changes, usually adding -es or -s. (One-syllable nouns typically add -es, while those with more than one syllable just add -s.)
  • Dative Case--is used for the indirect object of the sentence (the receiver of the direct object or an action). Ask yourself... "to whom or to what is the subject doing this?" The word endings in dative case are different from nominative case in all genders. In addition, when Genitive case is used, an -n is added to the plural noun itself (unless the plural form of the noun already ends in -n or -s).

As you move through your German study bit by bit, you'll soon become familiar with each of the different endings. Keep in mind that these are difficult topics--the most difficult topics that you're going to encounter. Just by being aware of them now, you have made great progress. Keep referring back to these summaries as you continue learning and you'll soon be feeling very comfortable with German grammar. Remember... understanding the grammar rules is the quickest way to improve your German. So now you have a great incentive! Good luck, and have fun learning this wonderful language!

Online Nursing Programs Provide Exceptional Education

Increased popularity of online education, in combination with current and predicted nursing shortages across the country, has led to the development of new online nursing programs, including online master's programs for nurses.

One program, the online Master of Science in Nursing at Benedictine University, was recently accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), an independent agency that works to improve the nation's health care system. CCNE accredits institutions that commit to "quality and integrity of baccalaureate, graduate and residency programs in nursing." The accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and valid for up to five years.

BU's M.S.N. program has existed for over 25 years, and the online program was developed for the modern-day Registered Nurse to continue his or her education with the BU mission of "scholarship, diversity and service" in mind. The health care field is evolving rapidly due to government reform and the availability of new technology, so BU designed its online program to include the type of education that nurses will benefit most from in the upcoming years. The online courses include instruction on current trends like caring for a growing senior population and patients who have chemical addictions.

The curriculum of the Benedictine M.S.N. involves eight core courses and four electives chosen by students to create a unique course of study. Nurses have the option to focus their electives toward one specific track, or to take courses in several different areas of interest. By allowing students to personalize a significant portion of their studies, the program accommodates a broad range of students while still meeting nationally accepted standards of nursing education.

M.S.N. programs give nurses the opportunity to develop the skills necessary for working in leadership positions. Lisa Envoy, Ed.D., program coordinator, said that working with and teaching other nurses is a "gift" for BU's nursing faculty. She values how she "can make a difference for others."

Did You Know - Your Child Only Needs To Know 25 Words To Read One Third Of The English Language?

According to The Reading Teachers Book of Lists the first 25 words on the list of most common words make up approximately one-third of all written material in English, and that the first 100 words make up one-half of all writing in English.

This is very good news for any parent who wants to teach their child to read early.

As a parent, undertaking the task to teach your child to read before they enter the school system can seem very daunting. However, armed with the information I mentioned above, the task can now become, if you pardon the pun, child's play.

In order to confirm this information, I decided to put it to the test by using my son's first reading book: Winnie the Pooh's - A Treasure Hunt, as my test material.

To begin with, I researched the 100 Most Common Words in the English Language (using Wikipedia as my source). From these 100 words I discovered that the 25 most common words in the English language are:

Listed in rank from No.1 to No. 25

* the
* be
* to
* of
* and
* a
* in
* that
* have
* I
* it
* for
* not
* on
* with
* he
* as
* you
* do
* at
* this
* but
* his
* by
* from

Children are amazing learners and will learn anything at a very rapid pace. The easiest way to teach your child to read is to simply begin by teaching them these 100 most common words, starting with the 1st 25 and then progressing to the next 75.

By simply learning 100 simple words your child will be able to read 50% of a book! This is truly remarkable.

So, going back to my experiment, I counted every word in A Treasure Hunt. There are 160 words in total in this book, of which 102 are common words. This means that 63% of the words in my son's first reading book are common words.

In order to verify the "25 words = one third of a book" rule, I also counted the 25 most common words in A Treasure Hunt. It turned out that 29.4% of the words in the book are indeed from this list of 25 most common words. Not very far off from the one third mark as you can see.

What all this actually means is that because my son has been taught the 100 most common words already, at the very least, he can already read 63% of his 1st book without my help.

This is a totally fulfilling and confidence building event for a child and leads to their first adult moment; when they can sit by themselves and read a book. Reading, like everything else, is a habit that children form at an early age; one that they will need if they wish to be successful in the future.

According to the National Council on Teachers of English Standards for the English Language Arts; "to participate fully in society and the workplace in 2020, citizens will need powerful literacy abilities that until now have been achieved by only a small percentage of the population".

Learning these 100 common words is essential in acquiring basic reading skill in English and this is the simplest and easiest way to begin to teach your child to read.

If you have a system, it can be even quicker and easier and you can have your child reading a book, like the one I mentioned above, within 30 days!

Being the one to teach your child their 1st words is one of the most amazing and rewarding experiences a parent can have. For a FREE mini course on the "Secrets to Successfully Teach Your Child To Read", go to http://www.yourchildcanreadin30days.com

You can't achieve a success overnight, but if you work on your goal step by step, you'll eventually achieve it. So, set a habit to learn and practice a foreign language for at least an hour daily.

2. Be optimistic and don't waste time complaining

Many people like to complain about the language that they are learning. Stop doing it and be optimistic. Don't waste time on useless things (complaining) and concentrate on the positive things. Really, it's very important to have the right, optimistic approach to learning languages if you want to learn easily. Leave complaining to those who don't want to learn a new language.

3. Unconventional methods are the best

The most popular ways to learn a language are taking classes and learning from a handbook. Both of these methods are also one of the least effective ones. The best methods are unconventional. That's it - three tips on how to learn foreign languages easily. Put them to use and I'm sure that you'll quickly achieve your goal and become a fluent speaker in a new language! Birth Records - Every Child Has Got the Right of Getting Named

It has been stated by the United Nations Convention on Children's rights that having a name and nationality is the unquestioned right of each and every child and the responsibility of insuring this basic right actually lies on federal or the state government. Birth records are therefore documented as well as maintained safe for protecting the national statistics and the true identity of all the citizens of the state.

A speech had been made by Archbishop Desmond Tutu at the United Nations demanding the citizenship right for every child. In spite of the laws and the statues of UN convention regarding the registration of the birth records almost about "510 hundred" babies have not been registered at their birth time. This particular amount is above 2/5 of the total births throughout the world.

Countries lacking birth records have emerged with the retrospective registration of all the kids having unregistered official births. Even though this process doesn't ensure all the findings of the unregistered births but still a chance has been offered for all the children and the adults to have their registration with the states and the nationality that they have.

At present, lives of almost "110-120 hundred thousand" people around the world have been affected by statelessness. As the large number of these stateless individuals are the youth, kids and babies so they face nationality problems while they live in their birth region and the habitual residence. If these birth records' statistics remain unnoticed then certainly the challenge will be put in front of the "first world countries" and they will have to deal with the increasing count of the stateless people who might try to seek the nationality of some other country.

Gary Bean is an experienced writer who is passionate about writing articles about life. He has his keen interest in knowing about the latest technology and then prepares articles on that to make the people to know how far the technology has advanced. So in this article he wrote about Birth Records.

Explore All Education Scholarship Possibilities To Reduce College Costs

No pun intended, but probably no student appreciates the cost of higher education than an accounting major. They can most likely even look over a loan by themselves and figure out how much interest they'll pay. Given this, they are some of the first to realize and appreciate what financial aid can do in regards to cutting that loan down to practically nothing.

What they may need help with is finding the assistance. As it happens, there really is plenty of aid out there, but knowing exactly who to approach is another business. What they should do is their share of research on their own, as well as consult with their on campus or online college financial aid officer.

In all, the sources for aid can be divided into four key groups, which can be defined by who is handing out the money. Almost all will expect such things as a FASFA form, previous grades and maybe an essay as part of the application process. Still, an accounting student should fill out as many as he or she can. After all, the more applications out there, the more likely they are to get the funding. All students should explore:

Federal and State Governments: By this it's not just enough to apply for the standard Pell Grant and SEOG. Various branches within a student's state government and the federal government have their own grant and scholarship programs. For example, the Central Intelligence Agency awards students as much as $18,000 a year. No source should be ignored out of hand.

Private Companies: There are a lot of accounting firms out there, and they can be superb sources for anything from grants to post-grad fellowships. A grant from AccounTemps can be as high as $2,500 a year. Telecommunications giant Sprint offers accounting juniors and seniors as much as $5,000 a year. Sprint also has an internship program to consider.

Professional Societies: These organizations like to keep their memberships large to overflowing, and don't mind throwing money in to help their own cause. For instance, the American Institute of CPA's has a fellowship program good for $12,000 a year for five years. The American Accounting Association has an undergraduate program that helps students to the yearly tune of $2,500.

Minority Organizations: This isn't just groups like the National Organization of Women or the Ron Brown Foundation. There are societies specifically designed for minority accountants and auditors too, such as the Association for Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting, the National Association of Black Accountants, and the American Society for Women Accountants who have grants of varying amounts for different conditions.

On top of this, students should examine organizations such as their local church, social clubs like the American Legion or Lion's Club, or the college itself. One can easily come up with several dozen different education scholarship leads by just going onto a search engine. Whether taking traditional or online classes, you will both benefit at both from the funds you secure by your due diligence and research.

Learning Japanese Easily

Despite being one of the most popular languages in the world, there are still so many people who are frightened by the thought of learning Japanese as they assume that it is too hard. So how does one go about how to learn Japanese easily?

The first thing that you have to realize is that you better forget that you want to find similarities within English and Japanese to help you; you will not. They are two very different languages in more ways than one.

One of the things that you will be happy to know is that there are things that make other languages hard that Japanese does not have. Grammatical gender or numbers are some examples of these. Be happy that you do not have these.

There is no doubt that learning a new alphabet can be pretty difficult but the point is, they can be learnt. All that you have to do is follow a couple of rules.

First and foremost you need to get it out of your head that Japanese is hard to learn. This can be said for every single language. It is all up to you and how you decide to perceive things. If you begin with the mentality that it will be difficult then expect no less than that.

The next best rule to follow is to make use of image association to learn the different alphabets that Japanese has. For instance if you can associate a specific word with a specific image or story then you will be able to learn faster.

Last but not least, the golden rule, keep at it. You will have to always do repetition to make sure that you learn it through and through. Use repetition software like Anki if you have to.

Heed the above three rules and learning Japanese should be easy for you.

Try the granite sink and shower pans for your bathroom.

Single Dads Navigate Online College Grant And Scholarship Possibilities For College Success

According to the U.S. Census, there are around 14 million single parents in the U.S. today. One out of every six of them are men. That's slightly over two million men trying to raise their children, maintain their home and hold down a job at the same time. True enough, but it shadows compared to the number of single mothers doing the same thing and at even less wages. At the same time, these men can no doubt use their share of help, too.

One thing these single fathers have no doubt seen are the ads all over place saying how President Obama wants to help single mothers advance their education. After all, the Bureau of Labor Statistic has hard studies showing the greater a person's education, the more money they make. What many of the single fathers have to realize is that even though it doesn't say so, the ads are also good for them.

Just like single mothers, single dads can find grants geared towards their needs. This not only can include covering tuition, fees and text books, but even financial assistance for child care or child sitting, food and even, in extreme cases, rent and utilities.

To start, the first thing a dad on his own should do is weigh his job position. If he is unemployed, what kind of job would he like? If he's already employed, what kind of degree would he need to improve his career? Once those decisions are made, the next step it to search for local community or online colleges that offer the right certification or degree programs. Make a short list of schools, at least three.

The next step is to get in contact with that list of schools and talk to a career counseling officer. These officers are also usually well versed in financial assistance. They will also help the single dad when it comes to filling out the always required FASFA form, which is necessary to determine financial need.

Now it's time to start applying for the grants. For starters, such programs as the SEOG and Pell Grant are a good start, but that isn't all that's available. Being a single parent more than likely means the father can look outside the Board of Education to the Social Services Administration for needed childcare, and possible rent, utilities and food assistance.

This is just the beginning, though. With or without the college counselor, the prospective student should definitely get on the Internet for an established search engine such as Google, Bing or Yahoo! Just by typing the search parameters "grants, single father," will yield literally hundreds of thousands of other prospects. Each will have its own criteria and more paper work, but apply to enough of them and a dad could end up with his entire costs covered.

What's really important here is in the long run, the education provided by online college grant and scholarships that enable a dedicated parent to improve his (or her) position. With an online degree, the one that makes the most sense for that busy dad, he ends up assisting himself and his children. Whatever else you want to call it, that's good parenting regardless of gender.

Achieving Your Career Goals With Master Programs Online

Have you given thought to your career goals? What do you hope to achieve when you complete your current course of study? These are questions that many students are unable to answer until they have begun to look into the future-even those who may be ready to complete their Bachelor's degrees. One of the reasons this often happens is students right out of high school are pushed into making a decision about college, quite often without any idea what they want to do when they graduate. Sometimes students are almost finished ready to obtain their Bachelor's Degree before they are fully aware of their career goals.

Even if you don't know for certain what you want to do when you graduate from college, it's a good idea to begin researching Master Programs online in order to ascertain what is available in different areas. Some of the things you may want to think about while you are searching Master programs online include:

• What direction do you wish to take with your career?
• Are you looking to teach in a particular field or work directly within the scope of your field?
• Which concentrations will provide the most opportunity for employment and advancement within your company?

While there may be other questions that enter your mind as you conduct more research on Master programs online, you can begin with the questions above and add more information as you continue researching. There are many Master programs online from which you can choose; making the right choice will allow you to achieve your career goals in the shortest period of time. However, you cannot make the right decision if you don't take the time to do the following:

• Identify your career goals
• Research the educational requirements you need to reach those goals
• Prepare yourself emotionally and educationally so you can achieve those goals

Matt Black is the Online Degree Blogger. With hundreds of schools and thousands of degrees to choose from, making the right education choice can be overwhelming. If you are considering an online degree my blog can help you make the right choice.

Elite College Scholarships Require Education Commitment In Early High School

Some 16,000 students throughout the country have been named 2011 National Merit Scholarship semifinalists. The semifinalists were selected from a pool of about 1.5 million high school juniors. They represent, in proportion to graduating seniors, the individuals who scored highest on Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Tests within the states where they reside.

These scholarships are considered by some to be among the most prestigious of scholarships. To get to even the semifinalist level, students must also perform well academically throughout high school. Their high school principals recommend them for these national awards.

Past National Merit Scholars include Microsoft founder Bill Gates; former first daughter Chelsea Clinton; "Twilight" author Stephenie Meyer; CNBC "Mad Money" host Jim Cramer; Amazon.com founder, CEO and chairman of the board Jeff Bezos; Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke; Actress Felicia Day (Vi in "Buffy and the Vampire Slayer"); and Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's.

Winners are chosen based on their achievements and skills, as well as how successful they might be in participating in demanding college and university studies. To get to the next level in the scholarship selection process, the semifinalists must work with high school officials to complete their applications. In addition to demonstrating leadership and involvement in activities within their schools and communities, the semifinalists are required to write essays and score high enough on SAT exams to confirm their previously provided PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test levels.

While the standardized test aspect of these awards has gained the criticism of some, more than 275,000 students have been recipients in the 55 years that these have so far been presented. The top prize of $2,500 is to be provided to 2,500 finalists. Some 5,900 additional Merit Scholarships are to be provided by outside organizations, colleges and universities. Winners are to be announced between April and July 2011.

Many colleges and universities rely on scholarships for merit as a means of drawing academically talented students. According to a 2002 report in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, merit scholarships can serve as motivation for students to place greater emphasis on their studies and can improve the quality of education. The report gave the example of Georgia's Lottery-funded HOPE (Helping Outstanding Pupils Educationally) scholarships and noted that African-American high school students with 3.1 grade point averages in core courses saw their average SAT scores rise by more than 20 points.

National Merit Scholarships are provided by the Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corporation, a privately funded, non-profit organization. The corporation also awards National Achievement Scholarships exclusively to high achieving African-American students. Each year, some 1,600 National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists are named from an entry field of more than 160,000. This year's semi-finalists are expected to be announced on Sept. 29. A total of 700 National Achievement Scholarships of $2,500 are typically awarded, along with an additional 100 or so awards that are sponsored by outside corporations.

Students can combine their National Merit Scholarships and National Achievement Scholarships with other scholarships they might be awarded, but not with each other. To apply the funds to college and university studies, students must often select institutions that are accredited by nationally recognized agencies. The college scholarships are a reward for students who dedicate themselves to their studies and their future.

Learning Spanish Vocabulary Words Online That You Will Not Find In Your Dictionary

Today I have a story to tell you that will help in learning Spanish vocabulary words online that you will not find in your Spanish-English dictionary. I recently sent an email to my newsletter subscribers saying that the Spanish language has more words than the English language. After I sent that email I received at least a dozen emails from readers saying "Patrick, this time you are absolutely wrong. It is common knowledge that there are more words in the English language than Spanish."

I have heard that too. I have read on the Internet that there are more English words than Spanish words.

But one thing that I have learned about the Internet is just because you read something on the Internet that doesn't make it any more credible than something you heard some guy on a street corner say.

So let me give you my side of the argument and PROVE to you that Spanish has a lot more vocabulary words than the English language.

I have several Spanish-English dictionaries. And all of them have more English words than Spanish words. Yes, you heard me correctly. All of my Spanish-English dictionaries have more English words than Spanish words.

Por ejemplo (for example), I have one Spanish-English dictionary that has 576 pages in the Spanish section and 667 pages in the English section.

But for TWO different reasons, I still INSIST that the Spanish language has more words. A whole lot more.

Reason Number One:

One problem is that English dictionaries include not only every word that we commonly use as English speakers, but the English dictionaries also include words that we rarely use as English speakers ( archaic words).

On the other hand, the Spanish dictionaries don't include MANY Spanish words that Spanish speakers use every day.

To prove my point I made a list of Spanish words that I thought I would not find in a Spanish dictionary. I then made a list of English words that I thought that I would not find in an English dictionary.

The overwhelming majority of the words on my Spanish list I could not find in any Spanish-English dictionary or any Spanish dictionary. I was able to find a couple in some Spanish dictionaries but not in others. But there was NOT one Spanish word from my list that appeared in every Spanish dictionary that I own.

Like I said, the majority of the words on my list did NOT appear in any Spanish dictionary.

And the words on my list of Spanish words were not slang (maybe one was a slang word). But all of them are common everyday words that I have either heard Colombians use here in Medellin or when I lived on the coast (Barranquilla) or words that I have heard Dominicans or Puerto Ricans use in New York.

Here's my list of Spanish words that I could not find in at least one Spanish dictionary (most did NOT appear in any Spanish dictionary):

1. maluco (bad, Colombia)
2. malparido (bad person, everywhere in Latin America, this word is offensive)
3. parcero (friend or "amigo," this word is very "Paisa" or commonly used in Medellin)
4. mofongo (dish made from mashed green plantains, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic)
5. cucallo (dish consisting of rice that is stuck to the bottom of the pot, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic)
6. pegao (same as "cucallo")
7. mojarra (fish that reminds me of a Red Snapper, everywhere in Latin America, especially Colombia and Mexico)
8. Saragosa (beans or "frijoles" -- this word is very "costeña" or costal and used on the Caribbean coast of Colombia in cities such as Barranquilla, Santa Marta and Cartagena)
9. apanado (Fried or "frito." A close translation would be "batter-dipped." A popular fast food favorite in Colombia is "pollo apanado" or fried chicken)
10. Patacones (fried plantain, Colombia, but called "tostones" in Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic).

From looking at my list of Spanish words, I guess it is obvious what I like most about Latin American culture besides the language: The FOOD.

I actually found the word "patcacón" in my Spanish dictionary. It is defined as "an old silver coin." A definition completely different to how the word is used here in Colombia.

I could also give you several words that are used here in Medellin on a daily basis that I have never heard anywhere else. Or words that have a completely different definition when I looked the words up in a dictionary. For example, "charro" means "funny" in Medellin. And "amañado" means happy or "contento."

Here's a list or several of my English words that I thought that I would NOT find in the English section of my Spanish-English dictionary.

1. diss (slang for disrespect)
2. slam-dunk (basketball term)
3. hip-hop (synonym for rap music)
4. lockdown (confining of inmates to their cells following a riot or other disturbance)

I found ALL of the above words in the English section of my Spanish-English dictionary. It seems that English dictionaries include every word imaginable from the English language. But Spanish dictionaries only include words that are commonly used in BOTH Spain and ALL Latin American countries AND regions.
