Free College Tuition - Apply to the Coast Guard Academy

Military academies are among the best colleges in the country and tuition free. In fact, almost everything, including food and room and board is free. What's surprising is that more people don't opt in for what turns out to be a guaranteed job after a free education. With unemployment hovering at 9.2 % nationally, here's a career that cannot be outsourced.

One of the finest examples of our military colleges is the Coast Guard Academy. It doesn't have the dramatic appeal of West Point or Annapolis, but will offer you an elite education and a career with the critical mission of protecting U.S. public interests in our nations ports and waterways, along our coasts, or even international waters if its required to protect our national security.

The U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut was founded in 1876 to educate United States Coast Guard officers. It has a complete residential military cadet campus but the smallest United States federal service academy when placed alongside the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

The Coast Guard Academy provides a four-year Bachelor of Science degree program, with a curriculum rich in math, science, and engineering. There is a five-year commitment to serve as a commissioned Coast Guard officer upon graduation. Approximately 80% of Academy graduates go to sea after graduation, although some go to Marine Safety Offices, Ashore Operations, or flight training.

You are eligible to apply for the Coast Guard Academy if you are:

  • A U.S. citizen;
  • Unmarried with no dependents or financial debt;
  • 17-22 years of age on July 1 of the year of entry; and
  • A high school graduate or GED recipient (or will be prior to entry).

However, unlike the other service academies, there are no congressional appointments - admission is based solely on academic competition. Also, though not required for review of your application, a qualifying medical exam must be on file before an appointment to the Academy can be offered.

The Coast Guard Academy is one of the most selective colleges in the U.S. Students come to the Academy to be challenged academically, physically, and professionally. By providing excellent academic programs, a structured military regimen, and competitive athletics, the Academy graduates competent and professional military leaders who serve as Coast Guard officers.

As part of your application to the Coast Guard Academy, one set of SAT Reasoning or ACT with Writing Test exam scores must be submitted. There is no minimum test score requirement. Successful candidates usually score at least 1100 combined Critical Reading (Verbal) and Math on the SAT, or have an ACT Composite of at least 24.

Each year, the Academy admits about 300 cadets from thousands of applicants. Each application goes through a rigorous review by the Cadet Candidate Evaluation Board. The board members pass their findings to the Director of Admissions, who makes an appointment recommendation to the Superintendent. All offers of appointment must be approved by the Superintendent.

Tuition, room, and board at the Coast Guard Academy are paid for by the government. The only caveat is that all candidates who accept an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy must pay $3,000 to purchase uniforms, a laptop computer, school supplies, and other necessary items. Other than this initial cost, there are no additional fees for Academy cadets.

All cadets receive $11,150 per year to cover the cost of uniforms, equipment, textbooks, and other personal expenses. Any funds remaining in cadets' accounts are given to them upon graduation.

The United States Coast has always been the eyes and ears of our seas. The question is not whether a young person should enroll in the Coast Guard Academy; the question is why shouldn't they? To read more about applying for a career with the U.S. Coast Guard, go here - http://www.uscga.edu/.

How to Best Utilise Interactive Whiteboard Resources

An Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) is a flat white board which is highly responsive to human touch or other controls that we prefer to connect. Normally when people are more than 10 it needs a connection with a projector to make the screen big and clearly visible to everyone.

Interactive Whiteboards have improved and gained a lot of importance in today's world since it launch in the nineties. They are also called as Smart boards as a company known as SMART Technologies holds major credit on creating them. Since then IWB resources are used not only in schools and educational institutes but they also widely used in different organisations for board meetings, presentations etc.

The Smart boards picked up quite well in the Classrooms to make them more interactive, interesting and fun. Students started enjoying the big precise images, pictures, videos wherever necessary, games, quizzes and many more. Student concentrations levels improved and also the attendance at the same time. The technology was seen more accepted by United States of America and United Kingdom than any other countries in the world. Today you would rarely find a school or institute which doesn't use the IWBs.

Since the launch of these Whiteboards, a lot of research has been done across students belonging to different regions and different age groups to know the benefits of the Smart boards. Majority of the studies and research show that they has made a positive impact and improved the teaching standards. They have encouraged students to improve self thinking and use ideas in their own presentations. The major benefit seen was the involvement of the entire class as compared to a particular set of students seen in the past.

The knowledge and need of adopting IWBs has grown globally due to all the benefits that it has displayed and also because of the confidence it has given about having more interactive sessions.

My Personal Story On How A Student Loan Payoff Calculator Helped Me

My senior year in college prompted me to take a $1,000.00 dollar student loan. The terms of the loan stipulated that I pay the loan off upon graduation-but if I chose to go to graduate school so I could defer payment until I completed my graduate studies. I did go to graduate school, immediately after my senior year and I did pay the loan off immediately, after I received my graduate degree. I'm not sure if they existed then, but if a student loan payoff calculator did exist, then, thankfully I didn't need assistance from anything like it.

Back then (1990), one heard from time to time on the campus where I completed my undergraduate studies. The students are talking about paying back one or more college loans. During that time, none of the discussions I heard did a student sound frantic, stressed out, or even overly concerned about paying that particular debt off-maybe they were good at hiding their feelings. But most of them stated that they, their parents, or a combination of the two, would handle that financial matter as quickly as possible. When I became an educator, soon thereafter, the stories my students tell me, concerning their college loan debts, weren't the same as the ones I came across as a student.

Of course, my students received their higher education at a time-which continues even as we speak-when college costs at most institutions go up every year. When one considers that most family households' incomes have not risen, on the same scale as college tuition costs, then one can see how today's students not only have to take out one or more student loans, but feel significantly more put out with the added pressure of figuring out how to pay them back under those circumstances. A student loan payoff calculator comes in handy for students whom are affected by that situation.

Andre writes guides and articles in loan payment and loan calculations. You can visit his site at http://bankhelpsite.com/student-loan-payoff-calculator-doing-5-steps/, where you can read about student loan payoff calculator.

Interactive Whiteboard Resources for Teachers

Interactive Whiteboards (IWBs) are a nice way for teachers to actively engage classrooms. These tools have proved cost effective and internet has loads of free resources to help the teachers learn on how to use.

Many websites on the internet provide several lesson plans and various activities that can be used in the classroom. The sites feature many resources to use with IWBs in subjects like geometry, geography, music and many more. This site for whiteboard users also features tutorials, interactive websites, and software which make it easy for the teachers.

You may also find many web pages that have several interactive math games which are specifically designed for the Smart Board. These games are normally used by the class teachers to engage the entire classroom and make it more interactive.

Teachers can use huge world maps to explore different parts of the world on these flat Interactive boards and provide a clear understanding to the students on the big colour screen. The IWBs can be used in various ways at all levels starting from the primary to the high schools.

Many parts of the world are running some contests or challenges where people create videos and/or presentations about how an IWB can be used in the classroom. The best are selected and are made available for the teachers globally. These presentation packs are being helpful at all levels. Like few may have used the Smart Board for a long time but still think it can be used in a better way. Some of them might have used it few times but are not very comfortable or even for those who have never used the Whiteboard. Internet has not only brought the world closer but it has been of great help to share good things internationally.

Information to Help You Choose the Right Online MBA Program

No matter what field you have chosen your career in or what your educational background is, getting an MBA degree is extremely beneficial to your professional future. MBA degrees can be obtained by attending a college or university that is accredited by the Department of Education to conduct MBA courses. But if you don't have the required finances or if you feel that you will be unable to balance a full time job as well as your study courses then a viable option is distance learning in the form of Online MBA programs. There are a number of online MBA programs that have been accredited by the Department of Education. They have proved to be just as good as far as quality of the courses go. And most importantly they are recognized courses so you will not be discriminated against when you apply for a job.

Aspirant students are skeptical about these online courses because it is difficult to ascertain the authenticity of these courses. This is a very good question to be asking if you are choosing an online course. If the program is not accredited then there are a few very dire consequences. One of them is that if you decide to change schools then the credits, you have meticulously acquired during the term you were part of course that was not accredited, will not be transferred. All your time, money and resources will be wasted. Another sever consequence is if you graduate from that a course that is not accredited then degree you obtain will not be of any use. Also it will reflect poorly on you and result in a loss of professional credibility which will be very hard to regain. It will also cost you your future prospects. There are few steps you can take to safeguard against this and guarantee that you have picked the right program.

When viewing the site of the educational organization you choose, check whether the site mentions their professional membership with an accrediting agency. Then cross check this membership on the site of that particular agency. What you must do is visit the site of the mentioned accrediting agency and see if the name of your chosen organization appears on their list of members. If the organization is registered with the agency its name will definitely be on the list. The next thing to check is the authenticity of the agency itself. This can be done by visiting the Department of Education database of Post Secondary Educational Institutions. Also you should check up the site of CHEA - Council of Higher Educational Accreditation. This organization examines all the accrediting agencies. The last thing to do is to research the faculty of your chosen organization. Sift through their resumes and credentials. Make sure that the faculty has the required qualifications and educational background to be teaching the courses you have chosen.

It may be a long and tedious process but in the event that you choose to invest your time and money in an institution its best to be assured that you are getting the best possible MBA course.

Enhance Your Academic Experience - Study Overseas Through An Online School

Many students decide that they want to take their learning experience to a whole new level - literally. Studying abroad is a way to inject excitement into your college career. You can take your college program to completely new heights simply by deciding to learn at another place on the map for a period of time.

Students who want to travel abroad aren't limited to studying in just one area. There are lots of programs that offer for you to spend a period of time learning at an academic institution in different countries. From Spain to England to Australia, the world really is your oyster when it comes to deciding where you want to study.

The first step for studying abroad is making sure you have the right travel documentation. You'll need an up-to-date passport, which you can acquire online or at many Post Offices across the nation. A passport is a form of identification certified by the national government. It will have a picture of you on it, as well as other identifying information. You can have your picture taken at almost any drugstore.

Depending on where you decide to study, you might also need a visa for the period of time you're going to spend away from your home country. A visa is issued by the country you're visiting. It gives you permission to enter the country and stay there for a period of time. Usually, when you apply for a study abroad program, the program will help you secure a visa for your travels.

After getting your identification sorted out, you're going to need to decide what type of program it is you want to participate. The number one question you need to ask yourself is this: how long do I want to be abroad? You can be gone for a summer, a semester, a year or for your entire degree. The options are all based around your comfort level.

You may also choose to pursue a different type of academic program while you're studying in another country. Your program may follow a specific topic, like business or arts. This is sort of like selecting a major for your program and choosing to focus on that specific topic the entire time you're gone.

Some students may decide on a program that offers an immersive language aspect. It's well documented that the best way to learn a language is to be completely immersed in it, so that you have no other option but to learn it. You'll walk away from this program more comfortable and fluent in the language you chose, simply from being surrounded by the language and the culture of the language for a prolonged period of time.

It doesn't matter whether you want to study somewhere else for a long time or just a short period. It doesn't matter whether you want to go for the culture, the language, the food or the academics. As long as you want to study in another locale while getting your online degree, you should take the first steps today to apply for an online school study abroad program and expand your academic experience!

Middle School Students Take an Educational Tour of Georgia

Recently, I worked with Cathy Carlton, a Social Studies teacher for Bennett's Mill Middle School in Fayetteville, Georgia, to create an itinerary for a class trip that encompassed historical highlights of the state of Georgia. Her class on Georgia history spans an entire school year. The class begins with the prehistoric Indians and continues with Colonial studies, a close look at the American Revolution, the antebellum period and Civil War. Studies also include a consideration of the impact of modern wars, a look at regions of Georgia and economics that thrive in them, and the way entrepreneurs have impacted life in the state.

An Educational Tour of Georgia in Sync with Curriculum Objectives
In previous years, Carlton took the student travel group to Savannah for three days and two nights. This year, she found it more economical to limit the trip to two days and one night, so more students could afford to attend. But saving money was not the only motivation to create this unique tour. "I felt like this trip was much more meaningful because we were able to visit many more sites around the state," noted Carlton.

Students Travel to Different Sites Across the State of Georgia
Some highlights of the tour included a visit to Milledgeville, Georgia, the first capital of the state, a tour of Andersonville Prison, where prisoners of war were housed during the Civil War, and a tour of CNN Studios in Atlanta, where students were able to see how television news is produced. In Atlanta, students also visited the Governor's Mansion as well as The Bremen Jewish Heritage and Holocaust Museum and Oakland Cemetery, where famous Georgians were interred.

The first stop on the tour was Andersonville Prison, a two-hour bus ride from the group's hometown. Carlton wanted students to see this National Historic Site, because it tied in with their classroom studies of the Civil War and modern wars. Students toured the site and gained a better understanding of the place where Northern soldiers were detained and housed during the Civil War. They were also engaged in learning about the dynamics of prisoners of war, and how it affects our society as a whole.

A Student Tour of Milledgeville: Georgia's First Capital City
The visit to Millledgeville seemed especially important to Carlton, as it tied in nicely with her curriculum and gave students a chance to actually see the grandeur of the historic capital. Carlton said, "Students were really impressed by the fact that the capital began there. It was eventually moved to Atlanta so it could be more centrally located. We were able to visit the Old Capitol Building, but we missed our tour of the Governor's Mansion there, because we were running a little late, having spent more time at Andersonville then we anticipated."

Educational Trip to Atlanta Includes Multiple Destinations
When the student tour group reached Atlanta, they took a break to eat supper at the Hard Rock Café, then toured Oakland Cemetery, where Bobby Jones, Maynard Jackson and Margaret Mitchell are buried. "The guided tours of Oakland Cemetery included the graves of these famous Georgians -- which were part of our studies -- and many other historical people as well," observed Carlton.

The educational tour group spent the evening at the Hampton Inn near the Perimeter Mall where breakfast was included the following morning. Their tour of Atlanta began with a look at the Governor's Mansion, where they actually saw Governor Perdue leaving the building that day. This was followed by lunch at the Varsity, a famous Atlanta landmark.

The afternoon was filled with a visit to the Bremen Holocaust Museum. Carlton was impressed with the tours given here, which were led by "survivors or family members of survivors. It was fascinating for students to hear what the holocaust was actually like. The group also viewed artifacts and videos of the holocaust."

The trip on Georgia history concluded with a tour of CNN Studios in Atlanta, founded by the famous entrepreneur Ted Turner, who also started the first television station in Georgia, TBS. The group of over 81 students was broken up into smaller groups for the studio tour, where they saw live news and also had a chance to glimpse the behind the scenes work involved in airing national news 24-hours per day. Carlton recalled, "Students were thrilled by seeing the live newscasters, because they recognized some of the people they've seen on television."

Educational Trip of Georgia was a Success!
Overall, creating a historical tour of Georgia was a positive experience for me and my staff. Usually, student tours are limited to the Atlanta metro area, because there are many educational sites to see in this city. After collaborating with Carlton on the creation of this custom tour, I can now see the benefits of widening the scope of destinations in Georgia. It provides students a larger view of Georgia's history because it includes landmarks that may be lesser known, but are equally important in understanding state history.

Student travel groups interested in touring Atlanta may want to consider including some of these prominent sites in their tour with visits to Milledgeville and Andersonville Prison included on their itinerary. Overall, students did not spend more than 3 ½ hours on the bus the first day, and they had plenty of stops to keep the travel time interesting.

Abundance Of College Classes At No Charge Can Spur Interest In Potential Students

Getting an education is a wonderful thing, but it can be quite costly. Unfortunately, rising tuition costs hinder some students' ability to enroll in college classes. There is help if you look for it in the right places. Free college courses are being offered online by many major universities, even Ivy League schools!

Participating institutions broadcast their online lectures over the Internet for free to anyone who would like to view them. Subject areas vary greatly, so you can find a course that interests you most. If you are currently undeclared with your major, you may want to view a few lectures in an area or two (or ten!) of interest before you decide to enroll for credit and spend your money on something you may not enjoy, or that may not count towards your final degree.

These courses at no charge do not count for college credit. What they can do is offer insight into what taking a college course is really like. High school students can watch lectures and understand the demands of college, as well as get a feel for the format of the courses.

Even if you are not looking to earn your degree, watching lectures from highly educated individuals on a subject manner that you find particularly fascinating is a great way to further your knowledge. Perhaps you are a photography buff who spends free time capturing special moments with your loved ones, or the scenery around you. You may have no formal training in the subject matter, but watching online courses in photography may help you brush up on your skills; you can also pick up some great techniques for free!

If you are more interested in college courses that will provide you with credit that will count towards your degree, there are scholarship programs out there that can allow you to take college courses for free. Search for programs that are specific to your major, or area of interest to get started. Or, visit your financial aid office for more details.

Online courses are a great way to earn your degree and keep a flexible schedule. If you work full time it may be hard to find the time to take classes at night or to take the time off of work to attend classes. Finding scholarships to pay for these less traditional courses may be easy if you have the time to search.

If you have searched for scholarships and did not find any that applied to you specifically, or still need to come up with more money to cover your costs, student loans can help bridge the gap. You can apply for federal or private student loans to pay for your education if you have run out of free financial aid.

These trial offers are a great way to get a head start on your education, or to test the waters to see what subjects you might be most interested in before you commit any funds. Think of the coin for these classes as free college money; after all, isn't that what scholarships are also? Whether you are a new or returning student, college courses can seem overwhelming. Viewing lectures and getting a feel for college is a great way to get ahead for free.

4 Conflict Resolution Tips Every Student Should Know

No matter what age we are, conflict in life is inevitable. Two toddlers will want to play with the same toy and refuse to share it; elementary students will have conflict with teachers as they try to enforce school rules and encourage appropriate classroom behavior; high school students will disagree with parents over "unfair" curfews, spending habits or cell phone over-use. As adults, we often have conflicting points of view with co-workers, supervisors or neighbors. Managing conflict can be a difficult task, especially when emotions are running high. Yet all of the conflicts we encounter, especially minor ones, are great opportunities to practice these problem-solving skills:

Conflict = Problem. Conflict is nothing more than a problem for which we can find a solution. While it can be difficult to keep emotions at bay, if you use the same process for solving conflict as you would for solving any other problem, the solution can often appear with relatively little effort. Step back from the situation and try to see everything as if you are not involved in the fray. A conflict often looks very different - and solvable - when you use this technique first.

Communication is key. It might be a cliché, but having an open and honest exchange of ideas can work wonders for solving conflict. Misunderstandings are a common reason disagreements occur. We're often saying the same thing or feeling a similar way as the person we are angry at, but just expressing it differently. While talking it over, just remember that while your goal is to be honest, you shouldn't be disrespectful or mean. Give the other person a fair chance to speak freely without being interrupted.

Break it down into four simple steps. When you're in the middle of a conflict with someone, it's common to feel like it's too complicated to solve. But if you simplify the issue, it can lead to a solution that works for everyone.

First, define what the problem really is. Accept honest input from those involved and be sure to listen to what they are really saying. Be sure to identify the important issues without affixing blame. Use factual statements and avoid exaggeration by using words like "always" and "never."

Second, brainstorm for ways to solve the problem in as many ways as you can think of. Even if it seems like none of the options will work, write them all down and discuss why each one will or won't work, or what could be improved to make the solution more effective at solving the problem.

Third, select the best option on your list. This isn't an easy task; you might feel like there aren't any "perfect" answers. But spending too much time brainstorming can interfere with the momentum you have created to solve the conflict, so don't lose it.

Forth, act on it. Don't hesitate or second-guess your solution. Put it to work right away - you can always tweak it later to better suit the conflict. Concentrating on the options, rather than the conflict, will put everyone involved on a more positive track toward a permanent solution that everyone feels is a win-win.

Mediate it. Sometimes even your best efforts to solve a conflict just doesn't work out. In these cases, it's helpful to find a mediator who will help you negotiate a conflict. You can ask a mutual friend, family member or an objective party to help you solve the problem. The mediator's job will not be to tell you what to do, but to help you sort through all the facts in order to negotiate a compromise. A mediator will see the situation objectively and help you see the conflict in the same way.

Warning About The Depression Treatment Myth: Don't Become Another Victim!

As a board-certified counselor practicing in Cary and Crystal Lake, IL, I have treated many patients for depression. Treatment for depression used to have good results.

30 or 40 years ago, if you came to a therapist with symptoms of depression, he could reliably tell you that the odds that you would soon get better were solidly on your side. He would most likely assure you that most episodes of depression run their course, benefit from counseling and end with total recovery, without drug treatment of any kind.

However, in the last several decades something changed in the field of diagnosing and treating depression that has led to a 600 percent increase in patients collecting Social Security disability because of psychiatric illness! There is no question that the contemporary approach to treating psychological problems is the use of drugs.

Between 1974 and today, the outlook for treating depression went from being a positive one to one that sometimes afflicts the patient for life. Why?

It's because of the "anxiety-depression medication myth." The myth has ballooned out of proportion to any reality because of the power of modern marketing.

Notice the commercials on TV and what do you see? The ads shape and condition your belief that this or that medication will make you better.

The harm is especially great if you happen to be one of the 65% of sufferers taking antidepressant medications who are failing to improve. Various studies have demonstrated that, in many, if not most cases, these types of psychiatric medications do not work any better than a placebo and, besides that, can also run the risk of serious side effects.

These side effects can include worsening the very mental disorder for which you originally started treatment! If you do not believe me, just look at the warning labels for these drugs on the internet.

They will make your blood curdle. Some experts assert that drug companies have even omitted disclosure of drug trial results when they showed no effects or negative effects.

However, many people are aware of the most common antidepressant side effects because they are so prevalent, including, sexual dysfunction and insomnia. Remember the TV; some of the negative side effects are mentioned in the ads but are done so, so rapidly you do not really notice them.

Also, some of the worst side effects, like significant weight gain and increased lipid and glucose metabolism, can be so unpleasant and troubling that patients taking these drugs often just quit taking them on their own!

A 2005 study mentioned in the New England Journal of Medicine reported that 74 percent of patients suffering from schizophrenia quit taking their medication either because it did not work; or because the side effects became unacceptable. Another dangerous problem that affects too many sufferers is the potent addictive potential of the anti-anxiety medications.

Perhaps the worst side effect of all is that you can acquire additional emotional problems or even a more severe form of psychological illness than that with which you started! That's right, thorough research on this serious subject suggests that after a possible initial alleviation of symptoms, antidepressant drug patients often, subsequently, spiral downward into a chronic phase of dismal long-term depression.

If side effects create additional symptoms or contribute to the acquisition of a more serious illness, you may need to take a new drug that may create even more serious problems. The little known and little discussed effect of these drugs is that sometimes they can actually cause more of the problems they were designed to treat.

This often hidden effect needs much more discussion and exposure to start eliminating the anti-depressant medication treatment myth. What type of treatment for depression and anxiety do I prefer?

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is a very effective treatment technique. It is based on the well-founded assumption that traumatic or troubling, conflictual situations have caused us to develop certain subconscious patterns of thinking that pathologically affect our view of ourselves, our environment and our history.

As I use cognitive therapy (CBT) with my patients, I isolate, re-structure and replace many of the pathological beliefs and cognitive patterns stuck in the background of their minds. These subconscious beliefs unknowingly to the patients, hypnotize them into feeling terrible about themselves and their situations.

After completion of CBT, the hypnosis is over! Then their symptoms can start to disappear.

During treatment, I will often direct my patient to use an STK, or self-therapy kit at home. These kits are used to reinforce the benefits gained during the consultations; they are used concurrently with the cognitive therapy.

STKs are powerful educational packages. They are designed in different formats, including MP3, CD, DVD, e-book etc.

As stated previously, they effectively re-teach and consolidate the principles of cognitive therapy learned in the therapy sessions. They use imagery, role-exercises and lifelike examples to reinforce the central core of healthy life principles and thinking patterns.

They also accelerate the speed at which ones disturbing symptoms are eliminated. Once the belief systems related to these troubling situations are isolated and replaced, patients are then free of the distorted thinking patterns that were triggered by the troubling event.

Dr Shery earned his doctorate at the University of Southern Calif. He is a board-certified counselor and is an author with over 30 years experience. He provides groundbreaking Self-Therapy Kits (STKs) that he uses with his own patients. They are guaranteed to eliminate anxiety, anger and agitation; if not satisfied, you get a no-strings attached, unconditional refund. Learn more about these New Self-Therapy Kits

Why is a Law Enforcement Degree Becoming More and More Popular?

Are you interested to work as a detective, a police officer, or as a secret service agent perhaps? All of these careers have one thing in common. They are all not just fascinating but these are the careers that are related to law enforcement as well. As the technology advances and the world become even more complicated, individuals who are highly trained in enforcing the law are needed all over the world.

You can complete a bachelor's degree and put your education into practice immediately after graduating to any of the available law enforcement jobs. But there are also those who pursue a higher degree as well particularly in criminal justice. They push their masters and even their doctorate degree because they have wider opportunities and have more chances of advancing to a wide array of choices at the same time. Of course there is no need to mention that the higher your degree the bigger will be your salary as well.

A degree in law enforcement would allow you to work on different fields since it requires various skills too. Aside from the careers mentioned above, you can also become part of the judicial and the court system too. And if you can, you can land a job in rehabilitation centers and even by appointed to take control of the prisoners in your local state.

Of course, not all law enforcement jobs are in the field. There are some who stays inside the offices and does business finances, accounting, and even programming too. You also don't have to be physically and mentally fit to do your job efficiently. It would also help if you know how to speak other languages fluently as well. Remember that not every criminal speaks English very well so you have to create a way on how they would comprehend you and the system in United States.

Know Your Lab Glassware: A Guide to Glass Beakers, Test Tubes, And Flasks

Indispensable in biological and chemical laboratories, lab glassware is traditionally made of heat-resistant glass but is now produced in plastics and plastic coated glass. Plastic ware is less expensive, less prone to breakage, and serves many purposes in the lab. Plastic coated glass is used for chemicals that present a danger if the glassware breaks. The plastic coating will hold the chemical until it can be properly disposed of. Glass is still preferred for many uses due to its transparency, heat resistance, and chemical stability.

The most commonly used glass is clear, borosilicate glass, also known as Pyrex, that can withstand the stress of heating. Brown or amber colored glass is used to keep contents protected from the ultraviolet and infrared spectrum of light and is available for glassware containers.

No matter what material laboratory glassware is made from, the names of the various glassware types remain consistent and are based on shape, volume, and intended use.

Flasks

Laboratory flasks are characterized by their shape, with a larger base and narrow open neck. Flasks serve a variety of purposes from collecting liquids to heating mixtures. They vary in size and shape, some having two necks. They are also produced in both plastic and glass.

Erlenmeyer flasks, also known as conical flasks, are the most common type of lab flask. First used by the German chemist Emil Erlenmeyer, they are flat bottomed and shaped like a cone with a single neck.

A Buchner flask is basically an Erlenmeyer flask with a small tube extending horizontally out of the neck. The side arm is specially made to tightly fit a flexible hose. These flasks are made of thick glass to withstand pressure changes as they are frequently used to create vacuums.

Volumetric flasks are precision flasks intended for accurate measuring of liquids. Metric measurements are marked on the flask. The flask has a pear or slightly bulbous shape with a long thin neck.

Florence, or round-bottom flasks are generally spherical with one or more long necks. There are some flat-bottomed Florence flasks that can sit without being supported. These are produced of borosilicate glass as they are used for boiling over a Bunsen burner and must be heat resistant.

A retort is designed for distillation. It has a spherical base and a very long thin tapering neck that points downward. Liquid is heated in the base, and the condensation then runs down the neck to a different container.

Beakers

Glass beakers are multi-purpose lab containers used for mixing and heating liquids. They have a cylindrical shape with a lip spout designed for pouring. Beakers are flat-bottomed and come in a variety of sizes, from one milliliter to large 10-liter plastic beakers. Although commonly made of borosilicate glass, plastic and stainless steel beakers are also produced. A beaker differs from a flask in their straight-sided shape. Most beakers are graduated, marked with metric units for measuring. They are used for a wide variety of purposes from mixing to heating.

Low form beakers differ from tall form beakers in the ratio of height to diameter. Low-form has approximately a 1.4 ratio while tall form is closer to 2. Flat beakers have a larger diameter than height and are used to evaporate liquids.

Bottles

Designed to contain liquids for storage, bottles come in a wide variety of materials, sizes, and shapes. Some are made with a flaring mouth to accommodate a glass stopper. Others have screw-on plastic caps. Bottles come in clear glass or amber glass for light sensitive liquids. They may be jar-shaped with a wide mouth, jug-shaped with a small thumb loop for secure holding, or have a square base.

Funnels

Funnels are inverted cones with a long straight neck. They are used for spill-free pouring from one container to another. They generally do not need to be heat resistant.

Burettes

Glass burettes are very long graduated tube shaped pieces of glassware used for accurate measuring of liquids. They are filled from the top and empty out of the bottom. A stopcock is located near the bottom to control the flow of liquids through the burette. They are manufactured for extreme accuracy and can be used to check measurements on other laboratory glassware. Burettes generally come with supports to hold them in place while measuring and release of liquids occurs.

Test Tubes

Test tubes are round-bottomed, cylindrical glassware widely used in laboratories to hold or mix small amounts of material. They can be stoppered with cork or rubber, and special racks are made to hold a group of test tubes. Test tubes are frequently used to culture organisms in biology, and special racks hold these almost horizontally for maximum culture medium surface.

Test tubes serve a wide variety of purposes from temporary storage in the lab to flower vases outside the lab. They are used by biologists, medical professionals, botanists, forensic technicians, and casually to contain everything from kitchen spices to beads.

NovaTech International provides more information on glass beakers and other lab equipment.

Career Professionals Recognizing Benefits Of Masters Degrees

The number of individuals going to school to obtain a college education is increasing significantly. With the advancement of technology, a lot more people have this option available to them. As it stands, the masters degree is the fastest growing degree in the country. If you have any desire to pursue a masters degree program then read on to get an idea of what it all about and how it can open doors for you.

A masters degree is the beginning to a graduate education and typically takes two years to complete. Students must first hold a bachelors degree in order to be considered for any advanced program. Entrance to a program for a science or arts master (the two most common) generally requires students to provide references, transcripts, and a letter of intent. They also much have passing test scores, generally the GRE, but this can also depend on your program of study - such as GMAT for business schools and the LSAT for law programs.

The most popular forms of these degrees are the MA (Master of Arts) and MS (Master of Science). Academic disciplines can usually be categorized under one of these two headings, then there are professional degrees, which you will learn more about in a moment. Disciplines such as English, History and Philosophy will garner masters in art degrees, while subjects such as biology and physics will receive the obvious masters in science. Of course, there are some subjects that lie in the gray area, so depending upon your university they could be either of the two.

Most academic degrees (e.g., History and Philosophy) are referred to as research masters degrees. They will generally include a combination of coursework, seminars, tests and usually a healthy serving of research in order to complete their masters thesis. Individuals in this program will be supervised by a committee of faculty who will advise them during the progression of their study.

Professional masters degrees are those programs that are geared toward specific career fields such as business administration, law or dentistry among many, many others. Their program can follow the academic structure or they can receive advanced coursework in a specific field like the professions mentioned above.

There are several great reasons for why one should go for their advanced degrees, with just a few those of an increase in your income and greater job opportunities. These two are not always guaranteed depending upon your field, but evidence shows overwhelming favor given to those with higher degree levels.

Students should not ignore the personal benefits of obtaining your advanced education. Each individual will definitely receive a sense of personal satisfaction by completing something as demanding as a graduate degree. You will also be discovering and expanding your knowledge on a topic that you apparently love if you're willing to pursue a program at this level. Cementing your knowledge on a topic you love just enhances your self-esteem.

Obtaining a masters online is one way working professionals are getting the degree they need to advance. Finding the time to attend a class at even a local college cuts into work, meetings, home and family life. Taking a course online, one after the other, lets you get the credits you need while you do the many other things clamoring for your attention. Use your down time productively and soon you'll succeed just as you planned.

Tips for Providing the Best Feedback in an Online Forum

Many online instructors are challenged with the task of providing quality feedback that students can use to gain the most from an online course. It may sound like a simple task, but at times can be a major challenge. Instructors struggle with building a relationship with students because they are not tangibly present in the classroom. This article will outline some steps that online instructors can incorporate into their classroom in order to provide students with valuable feedback.

1) Interact with students in the discussion forum. Most online schools have requirements for students to meet in the discussion forum. It can become increasingly difficult to post regarding the same topics for students. It can be helpful for students to see interaction with their instructors in the forum. Post new and challenging followup questions that promote critical thinking. Got an interesting article? Post a new topic titled "Good Read!" or "Interesting Facts" and include the article and source. Ask the students for their feedback and thoughts on the submission. This may be the breathe of fresh air that your students need!

2) Provide paragraph breakdowns in assessing student submissions. Students appreciate feedback, especially when there is something that they could have done better. Providing a paragraph (or two) dedicated to what they did "right" and what they could have done "better" will help them to improve on subsequent assignments. Remember to always start with a positive and what was done well. This is encouragement for the student that shows them they are on the right track, and can improve!

3) Attach grade documentation that provides feedback directly inserted into the submission. One common way to grade assignments in the online world is to download the assignment and use a different color font to edit the assignment, providing suggestions, and of course, positive feedback! This is an effective way to grade online because it allows the student to see exactly what improvements should be made, and how. It is also easier for students to review in this manner because the text is highlighted in their papers.

4) Provide a rubric prior to assignment submission, and use the rubric when reporting grade information. Many schools require instructors to create rubrics for students prior to assignment submission. However, other schools do not. In any case, rubrics are amazing tools that give students a clear picture of what is expected from them. In this case, the instructor could attach a rubric to the students grade, and provide a point by point break down on what was done well versus what could have been done better. The student can see exactly where points were lost and gained and subsequently learn how to improve.

5) Provide answer key after assignment has been submitted. If the course calls for a specific type of response, it is beneficial for students to see exactly whats expected. This allows students to see exactly what should have been submitted, and the quality of work expected by the instructor.

The online classroom has many tasks that are similar to the traditional classroom. There are also many tasks that must be enhanced due removing the component of "hands on". With the steps mentioned above it can be much easier providing quality, consistent feedback to your students!

Learning From Academic Colleagues Who Productively Manage Aspects of the Faculty Life

There are myriad facets to being a productive faculty member. In this article, you will be encouraged to consider productive colleagues in the categories of writing, travel, advising, and promotion/tenure/review processes. It is likely that all four of these areas are places where you could gain a few tips and techniques - or potentially an entire range of new skills and practices.

  1. Writing - I deliberately chose to label this differently than "research." So for now, just ask yourself who the faculty members are who get their writing done. Whether they are writing articles, books, monographs, conference papers, or whatever other kind of writing that is necessary for their field - they produce. Make a list of those folks.
  2. Travel - Depending on the work that you do, you may do a great deal of traveling for your scholarly activities or maybe you travel to conferences and other professional activities. Who have you noticed who seems to be an extremely productive academic traveller? They aren't crazed at the airport, they have their materials and documents handy, they have clothes that match once they get there, and...here's a big one, when they get back to the office, they re-enter with a sense of ease. That is someone to learn from!
  3. Promotion/Tenure/Review - If you are a newer faculty member, you are going to want to pay attention to those people who seem to have a system for getting their documentation together for their promotion and tenure packet. However, even tenured faculty members go up for annual or merit reviews upon occasion, so see if you have someone in mind who seems to know how to keep everything in order so that when it is requested, they are not running around like a chicken with its head cut off (which is never very dignified or productive for a professor!)
  4. Advising - Some faculty are not only excellent advisors, but they are productive in their advising. They have figured out how to best serve students, the department, and their own peace of mind by making sure that they have current information, correct documentation, systems for keeping tabs on students, etc. Determine who these folks are and write down their names.

So now you have this great list. What are you supposed to do? Systematically, take 2 names per month from your list and ask for a phone, email, or face to face meeting so that you can learn their secrets. They will be happy to share and honored that you noticed what you perceive as their excellence in productivity. This is time VERY well invested.

One of the most tedious and even terrifying parts of the medical school admission process is the interview. Being able to provide clear answers that are genuine and true can be tough for some, as they may tend to stammer or stutter their way through their answers. Being able to prepare yourself by reviewing common interview questions can prove to be very beneficial in the long run. Here is a short list of interview questions that can help you get into medical school:

1. What are your career plans and what led you to these decisions?

2. What do you feel is the purpose of Medical School?

3. Why are you interested in this program?

4. What made you want to become a doctor?

5. How do you handle stress?

6. What will you do if you aren't accepted into medical school?

7. What are your 2 best strengths?

8. What are your 2 biggest weaknesses?

9. What makes a successful doctor?

10. What experience do you have?

11. Why should you be accepted into this program?

By keeping these thoughts under your belt before you sit down to your interview can help you walk away with the acceptance letter in your hand.

Changes in Government Could Impact Higher Education

As a result of this year's mid-term elections, republicans will control the House of Representatives next year for the first time since 2006. While Democrats will still control the Senate by a small margin, this shift in party control could have a great impact on issues of higher education. Many republicans in Congress have long opposed an increase of federal aid to students, and the Obama administration's attempt to provide additional federal student loans may be short-lived, forcing students to borrow even more money from private lenders in the future.

Congressional republicans have also been opposed to increased government interference in for-profit schools. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan has called for stricter government regulation of for-profit colleges, "which include some of the largest online education programs" like Kaplan University and the University of Phoenix, after government investigations questioned the school's recruitment tactics and credibility. Proposed "gainful employment" laws require for-profit colleges to offer proof that their students are repaying loans before the schools are granted federal financial aid. One rule states that for-profit colleges cannot take "more than 90 percent of tuition from federal financial aid programs." Many republican lawmakers have asked Duncan to repeal these rules.

A statement made by Harris Miller, president of the Association of Private Sector Colleges and Universities, criticizes gainful employment rules, claiming that "the administration's proposed regulations single out a specific set of students and schools, rather than apply to all students across the board." If for-profit schools must endure stricter government regulation, many feel that public colleges and universities should as well. Those opposed to the laws claim that they have the potential to hurt nontraditional students like working adults and students from low-income families, whose higher education options are already limited. Seeking a higher degree could become out-of-reach for them as legislation changes.
