Tips on How to Understand An American Accent

Are you looking for some tips on how to understand an American accent? If so, read on, because this article is for you! There are many things that you can do if you want to understand Americans better. Here are two extremely effective ways to do it.

1. Listen to podcasts

Podcasts are extremely effective if you want to improve your listening skills! Just go to iTunes, look for some free American podcasts about your interests, download them, upload on your MP3 player or cell phone and listen to them as much as you can - while jogging, waiting in a line or shopping.

However, keep in mind that you need to concentrate while listening - pay attention to the way native speakers speak and try to understand them. Passive listening won't help you.

2. Watch American movies with subtitles

It's a very popular method, because it's insanely effective. This is one of my favorite methods to work on my American accent. Why? Because you have fun while doing it and you can very quickly learn a lot of useful things - not only improve your listening or speaking skills, but also learn a lot of new words.

How should you practice with movies? It's simple - find some good American movies with subtitles in English, turn up the volume of your speakers or headphones, watch a movie and pay close attention to the way the actors speak (and repeat after them if you want to improve your American accent). Read subtitles if you can't understand something. The next step is to stop watching movies with subtitles.

That's it - two very important tips on how to understand an American accent. If you take action and put them to use, I'm sure that you'll quickly learn how to understand an American accent! Don't forget to practice on a daily basis. Good luck and have fun while learning!
